Annual Meetings of the Parish

14.05.2024 – 6.30pm – Annual Parish Meeting – North Tuddeham Village Hall –  ALL WELCOME! – AGENDA

The Annual Parish or Town Meeting is not a council meeting. It is a meeting of the Parish or Town electors taking place between 1 March and 1 June by law. Electors can contribute to the Agenda and in practice, these meetings often celebrate local activities and debate current issues in the community.

A brief summary:

Firstly, like any other organisation or company, the Council needs to hold an annual meeting to carry out those things that only need doing once a year which include · Electing a Chairman · Electing a Vice-Chairman  · Appointing committees · Appointing representatives to other bodies (e.g. the Village Hall Committee etc) and Reviewing policy documents such as Standing Orders, Financial Regulations, etc.

Secondly, there is the requirement to hold an Annual Parish Meeting. This is, in legal terms, a quite separate body from the Council, but it is invariably the Council that arranges it. Its decisions are not binding on the Council, though a wise Council will normally want to take heed of what is said at the meeting!  Bizarrely enough, the Annual Parish Meeting a hang-over from the Middle Ages when there was no Parish Council and merely a body of people getting together to get changes for the benefit of often very poor residents; despite the passage some considerable time, we are still legally obliged to hold one.  This meeting is open to all electors of the Parish, who have the right not only to attend but also to speak on any matter of local interest. This is in contrast to a Council meeting, where electors who are not Councillors have no automatic right to speak (though we do have a regular agenda item for public participation at our Parish Council meetings.)

This year both these meetings take place on Tuesday May 14th 2024 at North Tuddenham Village Hall – the Annual meeting of the Parish will commence at 6.30pm, and the format will be informal, beginning with the Chair speaking about the work done in the Parish over the preceding year, followed by your chance to vocalise anything you feel pertinent, or for local groups to show-case their own achievements.  The second meeting will be the formal Annual Meeting of the Parish Council and will begin at 7.30pm and follow an agenda.
